<image:caption>S/L Ian Blair DFM signing the Return from Caen prints. I have to include a remarkable story about Ian when he was an air gunner on Blenheim's in North Africa. They were attacked by an enemy aircraft near the coast. On the first attack the pilot was killed and the Blenheim started to go down. Ian, who'd never flown an aircraft before managed to get into pilots seat and evaded continued passes by the e/a who eventually flew off. Cpl Blair navigated the Blenheim back to base, lower the undercarriage and landed the plane perfectly. The Station Commander gave him an immediate DFM. He subsequently went on a pilots course and did two successful tours as a Spitfire pilot.</image:caption>

It was shot off by the 56th Fighter Group's Mustang P-51''s. Gunter's spectacular home high up on the hills overlooking Bad Reichenhall was the most beautiful house and setting anyone could wish for. It was also snowing very heavily and I was worried about being stranded high up in the mountains while the signings took place. I was relieved to make it down, though mostly sideways however. In 1941 he completed a tour as a rear gunner on Wellingtons, gaining a DFM. Commissioned and taking a pilots course in Canada he went to the Far East flying Dakotas in Burma gaining an immediate DFC for rescuing wounded American Special Forces stuck behind enemy lines. Larry flying through the night landed the 'Dak' in a paddy field. The local villagers came out and by lifting the tail turned the Dakota around so Larry could fly back to base. I played golf at Knole Park for 27years, and was so bad at it I found places in the park, looking for my golf balls, that not even any of the 2,000 deer knew existed. With the seven (actually now eight........don't ask!) oak trees around the bottom end of the pitch. I was painting here in 1979 and met a man who witnessed a plane land on the pitch and later managed to take off again, just, during WWI. Also, a lady used to stop everyday and have a chat. She turned out to be the mother of Stuart Sutcliffe, the Beatles original Bass player. He left the band to pursue a career as an artist, but tragically died in Hamburg in 1962.</image:caption>

After I had travelled, including to NZ, around the UK obtaining the four signatures I needed, I came up with another mad idea of getting all the surviving members of the 1953 British Everest Expedition to sign a further 20 prints. It was a great privilege to meet and obtain the signatures of; Charles Wylie, George Band, Michael Westmacott, Alf Gregory, Sir Ed Hillary, George Lowe and Michael Ward. Doug Scott during his lecture tours would auction off the prints, and the money raised helped the outlying villages in the Nepalese hills including the building of bridges and schools etc.... I'm very pleased to say the prints have long since sold out.</image:caption>

It's a well-known location as the Beatles came down to film their 'promo' for the songs Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane here over two days in January 1967. To my everlasting shame my mother said would I like to see the Beatles in Knole Park? I said 'no' (I was not quite 7yrs old)................as the song goes 'regrets, I've had a few'; this one of them.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Battle of Mirbat. Dhofar, Oman. 19th July 1972. 9 SAS soldiers came under attack by a force of up to 400 communist enemy (Adoo). I had to go down to Hereford to talk to the survivors of the battle. It was important for each of us to get the finished painting as accurate as possible. In the end, thankfully, all of the SAS men said the picture was indeed totally accurate. The only 'artistic licence' I used was reducing the amount of smoke on that day. The prints carried the signatures of six of the survivors of that day. Awards were a DSO, a DCM and two MM's.</image:caption>

Their Battalions (4th /5th Dorsets) fighting from Normandy to Arnhem, Netherlands. My grandfather's name was Tilly, and in the advance through France his Battalion after very heavy fighting, liberated the town of Tilly.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My favourite Patrol Base(PB): Musa Qaleh. A market every Saturday has thousands cross the wadi. I used to sit on the roof of the HQ and look out on the scene, which I also used to do at night through the sentry's night vision goggles. This is always more interesting as the locals think they're not seen far out in the wadi and the stars are wonderfully fabulous too. Scenes not changed for a thousand or more years. I painted this to include a hidden meaning within the scene in front of me.</image:caption>

It was hard work but a joy to paint and now hangs in 101 Log Brg's HQ in Aldershot.</image:caption>
